Author Bobbie Ann Mason’s father-in-law, Barney Rawlings (1920-2004) was the main inspiration for her new novel, The Girl in the Blue Beret. He was a B-17 co-pilot during World War II, his plane crashed in Belgium and he was smuggled through Belgium, France and into Spain by civilian resistance fighters.
