William H. Townsend (1890-1964) was a Lexington lawyer, author, historian and expert on Abraham Lincoln. He bought Helm Place in the 1940s and displayed much of his collection of Lincoln artifacts in the house, which was the home of his daughter, Mary Genevieve, and her husband, Joseph Murphy. This portrait of Townsend hangs in the front parlor of Helm Place. Photo by Tom Eblen | teblen@herald-leader.com
