This cherry Shaker press — signed W.H. Pfiffer, Nov. 28, 1856 — was likely made at the South Union Shaker community in Barren and Green counties. It is a fine example of elegantly simply Shaker furniture made there and at Shaker Village at Pleasant Hill in Mercer County. The press is featured in the new book, “Collecting Kentucky 1790-1860” by Genevieve Baird Lacer and Libby Turner Howard with photography by Bill Roughen. Photo by Bill Roughen
