What tree physiologist Tom Kimmerer calls the Schoolhouse Oak dominates the skyline where Military Pike meets Harrodsburg Road. Ball Homes is preserving the tree on more than three-quarters of an acre as part of its plan to develop surrounding property into a subdivision. The company hired Kimmerer to create a conservation plan for the tree, which he thinks is between 400 and 500 years old. Kimmerer hopes the arrangement will be a model for other Bluegrass developers to encourage them to keep old growth trees as neighborhood icons. Photo by Tom Eblen | teblen@herald-leader.com
